What is SoundLab

One of CMA Thrust's line of research is Sound and New Media. Here, there are projects of different natures: from music composition and audio analysis to musical instrument design, and even ultrasound.

To support this work, we have established the SoundLab. This is a space where researchers, students, and other collaborators can access professional and research equipment to record, analyze and manipulate realtime digital audio. It is a sound-insulated space equipped with state-of-the-art audio technology. Here, you can find recording equipment, audio editing and mixing stations, and a variety of musical instruments and digital controllers.

The SoundLab is accessible 24/7 via the HKUST(GZ) portal [link to how access page]. It is located at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) campus, within the CMA facilities on the third floor of the building E2. It is comprised of 2 rooms, SoundLabL and SoundLabR, that are interconnected and can work together – say as control and recording room – or independently.

The lab's main purpose is to serve as a highly specialized lab facility for research and teaching activities and provide our community with a physical space well-suited for carrying out sound-related projects. We foster a community-based approach and believe that by offering an accessible, shared context, we can create an environment where everyone feels welcome and free to develop, improve, and discuss their ideas.
